Abstract

"We are all our history. Yet despite curricular revisions, the mainstream historical narrative that shapes the way we teach students about the Canadian nation can be divisive, separating “us” from “them.” Responding to the evolving demographics of an ethnically and culturally heterogeneous population, Transforming the Canadian History Classroom calls for an innovative approach that instead places students--the stories they carry and the histories they want to be part of--at the centre of history education. Samantha Cutrara explores how teaching practices and institutional contexts can support ideas of connection, complexity, and care in order to engender meaningful learning and foster a student-centric history education. Applying insights gained from student and teacher interviews and case studies in schools, Transforming the Canadian History Classroom delineates a learning environment in which students can investigate the historical narratives that infuse their lives and imagine a future that makes room for their diverse identities."--

Abstract

Between 1928 and 1971, nearly one million immigrants landed in Canada at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. During those years, it was one of the main ocean immigration facilities in Canada, including when it welcomed home nearly 400,000 Canadians after service overseas during the Second World War. In the immediate postwar period, Pier 21 became the busiest ocean port of entry in the country. Today, people across Canada still enjoy connections to Pier 21 through family history and stories of arrival at the site. Since 1998, researchers at the Pier 21 Interpretive Centre and now the Canadian Museum of Immigration have been conducting interviews, reviewing archival materials, gathering written stories, and acquiring photographs, documents, and other objects reflecting the history of Pier 21. This book builds upon the resulting collection. It presents a history of this important Canadian ocean immigration facility during its years of operation and later emergence as a site of public commemoration.

Abstract

"Everything is Relevant: Writings on Art and Life, 1991–2018 brings together texts by Canadian artist Ken Lum. They include a letter to an editor, diary entries, articles, catalogue essays, curatorial statements, and more. Along the way, the reader learns about late modern, postmodern, and contemporary art practices, as well as debates around issues like race, class, and monumentality. Penetrating, insightful, and often moving, Lum’s writings are essential for understanding his practice, which has been prescient of developments within contemporary art, as well as the international art world over the last three decades."--

Abstract

"As issues of history, memory, and identity collide in society and in the classroom, the timing is ideal to investigate the views of twenty-first-century students. Relying on the theory of historical consciousness, this book presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted with over six hundred French Canadian students, examining their narrative views of the collective past. The authors offer new evidence on how young citizens from various regions and ethnocultural groups of Québec and Ontario think about their national history in the twenty-first century and what impact education, historical culture, and the "real-life" curriculum of meaningful experiences have on the formation of narration, identity, and historical consciousness."--

Abstract

At the heart of fame is the tricky business of image management. Over the last 115 years, the celebrity autobiography has emerged as a popular and useful tool for that project. In Limelight, Katja Lee examines the memoirs of famous Canadian women like L. M. Montgomery, Nellie McClung, the Dionne Quintuplets, Margaret Trudeau, and Shania Twain to trace the rise of celebrity autobiography in Canada and the role gender has played in the rise to fame and in writing about that experience. Arguing that the celebrity autobiography is always negotiating historically specific conditions, Lee charts a history of celebrity in English Canada and the conditions that shape the way women access and experience fame. These contexts shed light on the stories women tell about their lives and the public images they cultivate in their autobiographies. As strategies of self-representation change and the pressure to represent the private life escalates, the celebrity autobiography undergoes distinct shifts--in form, function, and content--during the period examined in this study. Limelight: Canadian Women and the Rise of Celebrity Autobiography is the first book to explore the history and development of the celebrity autobiography and offers compelling evidence of the critical role of gender and nation in the way fame is experienced and represented.

Abstract

"In Pillars of Salt, Lianne Merkur offers an account of early 21st century immigration as experienced by Israelis in Berlin and Toronto. Commonly portrayed as contrary to the territorial emphasis of national integrity, these individuals and communities appear to explore a sense of belonging that evaluates and incorporates both foreign and familiar elements. Social media allows for an alternative space to balance between new home and homeland, studied here as developing simultaneously in multiple sites. The author makes use of innovative methodologies to document the participants' own perspectives expressed online, at events or on paper. She thereby challenges established norms of interpretation to prove that personal decisions, primarily regarding preferred language or simply self-identification, are the cornerstones of collective character"--Provided by publisher.
